Strategy Analytics: Smartphone owners want thin, larger screened phones

Strategy Analytics has done some consumer research and found, in general, consumers preferred smartphones with screens even larger than their existing handsets, as long as the devices are also thin, a strategy exploited with great success by Samsung with its Galaxy II and now Galaxy Note range.

“Almost 90 percent of existing smartphone owners surveyed chose a prototype smartphone with a display larger than their current device,” commented Paul Brown, a Director in the Strategy Analytics User Experience Practice. “This trend is driven by increased mobile web browsing capability, as well as engaging video and gaming experiences.”

The surveyed found smartphone buyers preferred phones in the  4.0-inch to 4.5-inch range, as long as the device is also thin.

Kevin Nolan, Vice-President for the User Experience Practice at Strategy Analytics, added, “In order for smartphone owners to adopt larger devices, it is important for handset manufacturers to ensure that mobile devices are not too heavy and that the devices remain thin enough for purses and pockets.”

Windows Phone has interestingly led in the large screened device arena, with the HTC HD2 at 4.3 inches and the HTC Titan at 4.7 inches breaking new ground.  In recent times however the majority of second generation Windows Phones have been less than 4 inches, as Microsoft addresses the low end of the market.
