Spotify, the music streaming giant, is planning to offer paying subscribers a free audiobook trial in the coming months. The trial will allow subscribers to listen to up to 20 hours of audiobooks a month at no additional cost.
In an exclusive report from the Wall Street Journal, Spotify is reportedly eager to become a major player in the audiobook market by partnering with major U.S. publishers on a pilot program that could expand to other English-speaking countries.
Investors are demanding that the company become profitable, and one way that Spotify is trying to do this is by expanding into new markets, such as audiobooks, and “diversifying its offerings.”
According to the source, Spotify execs are enthusiastic to dethrone the dominant audiobook platform from Amazon, Audible, by linking up with several publishers in the industry and exploring various methods to compensate them.
In case you missed it, Spotify has also expanded its AI-powered DJ feature to a wider range of countries. The feature is now available in at least 50 countries and is expected to be available in more countries in the future.
The pilot program is expected to launch in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. The program will offer a variety of audiobooks, but the specific titles are still being finalized.
