WeChat — China’s premier messaging app — has joined the ephemeral video messaging chat popularised by Snapchat and later adopted by Facebook’s Instagram platform.
Known as Time Capsule, users can record short clips of up to 15 seconds which can be shared and viewed for a maximum of 24 hours.
WeChat’s Time Capsule clips are designed differently from Snapchat or Instagram’ s Stories are by necessity. Rather than showing up at the top of the ap like either of that two, users will have to see a blue ring on a friend’s profile and select in order to see the stories. This means the tendency to simply watch all Stories that exists on Snapcat can’t bereplicated.
The difference is due to WeChat’s tendency to act as a super app, one that is used by everyone from friends to bosses to random retailers on the street. It is a marriage of WhatsApp and Facebook — and every food delivery app you’ve never heard of.
