Sattelite TV company Sky went from having the worst set-top box software to one of the best with their Sky Q box, and the company has been regularly updating the software of the appliance with desirable new features.

Yesterday Sky  announced a number of new features coming to the box including:

  • A new YouTube app with support for Ultra HD.
  • A new Kids Mode which features a colourful child-friendly user interface which restricts kids to the Kids section and relevant on-demand content. It remains active even when the box is switched on and off and requires a PIN to deactivate.  In addition, the Home button takes you directly to the Kids area and the Search, Voice and 3-point buttons are not active.
  • A new energy-saving Eco Plus mode which reduces power consumption in standby mode to as little as 0.5 watts. To update the device it is woken for only 1 hour per night and then goes into Deep Standby Mode. Regular recordings will however still work.
  • On Demand content will now offer the ability to watch trailers and users will be offered personalized recommendations based on their viewing history, including Netflix content.

The new features will be rolling out to Sky Q customers in Germany over the next few weeks, and will presumably come to everyone else in due course.
