Have a Galaxy S10 or Note 10 variant? You may get your taste of Android 10 sooner than you think. The firm has started rolling out its beta test, but a statement made by Google and the Android team (spotted by BGR), means that users may see Android 10 before 2020.
“[M]any manufacturers such as ASUS, LG, Motorola, OPPO, Realme, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Transsion, and Vivo have committed to updating some of their devices to Android 10 by the end of the year,” Google said, this week.
Here’s what’s new in Android 10:
- Dark Theme – Google is finally adding a native dark theme to Android. This comes with a toggle in the quick settings area and allows users to flip their device theme at the touch of a finger.
- Gestures Support – Love iOS gestures? You’ll be glad to see a version of them on Google’s Android 10.
- Live Caption – Videos are automatically captioned, allowing users who are hard of hearing to understand what is being said even if they can’t hear it clearly. This works not only on web video but also on audio messages and captured videos.
- Privacy Controls – Google has implemented more granular permissions, especially for things like storage and location. Users now have more control over what apps have access to on their devices.
Why you won’t be seeing hardware dependent features like improved support for foldables on your Samsung phone (unless you’re one of the lucky few to have a fold, the privacy updates and digital wellbeing features are something to look forward to. Samsung will be adding its own twist on Android 10 with OneUI 2.0 as well, its dark theme will extend to the wallpaper for example. It’s already launched a beta test, and users can sample it in select regions.
If this beta test goes well, Samsung will probably start its rollout for Android 10 around Christmas.
