Unlike iPhone users, our readers would not be excited by the presence of Qi chargers in phones, given that we have been using them since 2012.

What is, however, exciting is the advent of true room-scale wireless charging, where merely being within 15 feet of the transmitter means your device can start soaking up electrons.

Such is San Jose-based startup, Energous’s promise, and according to the FCC, who just certified their solution, they can indeed deliver, and safely too.

Their system converts electrical power into radio waves,  which is then beamed to devices with a compatible receiver. Their first solution, with the WattUp Mid Field transmitter, only supports 3 foot but can charge a number of devices at a time, and in the video below the CTO of Energous, Michael Leabman,  claims up to 15-foot range.

Even at a 3-foot range, it would enable things like a wireless charging desk where you never have to plug anything in again.

Energous does not have any WattUp devices ready to ship yet but does plan to show off the technology at CES 2018 in 2 weeks.
