At Summer Game Fest, Capcom unveiled a hands-on demo of Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline installment in the franchise arriving February 27, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X|S .
The demo dropped you into a dimly lit medical ward in Raccoon City, playing as FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft. Suspended upside-down on a gurney, she must free herself, explore the ward, and escape—all without clear objectives. This stripped-back setup amplifies dread as you search for items like a fuse and lighter to power through oppressive darkness .
Capcom built Requiem on its RE Engine, upgrading its photorealistic lighting and textures to heighten the atmosphere. Whether you choose first- or third-person, Grace’s animations and reactions adjust to the camera, making each perspective feel native. Light sources cast realistic shadows, and every creaking floorboard brought audible tension.

Grace’s vulnerability defines the experience. Without weapons at hand, players flinch at every distant footstep. A monster tall, bug-eyed, and eerily clever appears after a jump scare, stalking like Mr. X from past entries. It can break cover, squeeze through ceiling holes, and turn lights off when cornered, forcing you to slip through safe zones or improvise to survive.
This demon evolves the franchise’s horror roots. Puzzle-solving remains intact, involving fuse boxes, gates, and hidden switches, but now you stew in fear rather than jump, fight, or escape cycles. Late in the demo, smashing a bottle skews the creature’s attention long enough to progress, but a final grab signals Grace isn’t safe yet.
Capcom left us wondering whether this scenario is a “one-off” sequence or a core gameplay loop emphasizing stealth and resourcefulness. Still, blending perspectives, pacing, and setting signals a fresh direction for Resident Evil. Without combat, Requiem forces players into constant pressure: choose when to fight fear with light or hide and remain silent.
Resident Evil Requiem launches February 27, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Windows.
