Bloomberg today reported that Microsoft is working on software for ARM based servers. According to people familiar with its plans, Microsoft is already testing a Windows Server OS that runs on ARM based servers. Microsoft has no plans yet to make it available commercially. ARM based servers offer more efficiency in computing because of the low cost and power associated with it.

Microsoft is already part of Open Compute Project started by Facebook which deals with ARM based server designs. Microsoft’s spokesperson confirmed that Microsoft participates in an industry forum driven by ARM around the Server Base System Architecture, as a part of our continuous work with industry partners to deliver solutions our customers want.
