In the KP Internet Trends 2017 report which was presented at Code Conference today, there was a slide about public cloud adoption trends. Everybody knows that Amazon Web Services is a dominant player in this market and their last quarter cloud computing revenues grew by 43% year over year to $3.7B. Amazon’s cloud revenue is bigger than its next top 5 competitors’ cloud revenue combined.

Being the late entrant into the public cloud market, Microsoft is making significant investments to catch up with Amazon. According to the latest data from Rightscale 2017 State of the Cloud Report, Azure’s public cloud adoption is now at 34% among the enterprise. Last year, the number was just 20%. Amazon had a flat growth this year and their adoption rate remains at 57%. Also, the number of enterprise customers who are experimenting and planning to use Azure is higher than that of Amazon. I would say Microsoft is now well positioned to take on Amazon in the public cloud market. They now have the right technology and strategy at the right time. What do you guys think? Can Microsoft beat Amazon in the cloud market before 2020?
