With E3 2019 winding down, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has given his thoughts on the annual event.

With Xbox rival Sony abandoning E3 in favour of their own State of Play livestreams, E3 undoubtedly felt a tad empty this year.

Speaking with Giant Bomb, Spencer expressed his fondness for Sony’s E3 presence in previous years. “I wish Sony was here,” Spencer said. “E3 isn’t as good when they’re not here.”

With Sony’s first-party offerings drying up in the run-up to the next-generation PlayStation 5, their self-removal from E3 isn’t surprising. Despite having some strong third-party exclusives, such as Final Fantasy 7 remake, they appear to be announcing titles in their own time. Remember that recent Death Stranding announcement?

Nevertheless, E3 without Sony is like a beach without sand. Despite being Xbox’s primary competitor, it’s only natural that Xbox would want them there. Imagine playing a game of footie without an opposing team.
