OpenAI has finally come up with a response to Elon Musk’s lawsuit that the billionaire filed a few days back. Explaining the mission and its relationship with Elon Musk, OpenAI has said it’ll move to dismiss all of the claims from the lawsuit.
Musk, in its lawsuit, claims that OpenAI breached the contract by not adhering to its commitment to open-source AI development. Instead of focusing on developing AI for the benefit of humanity, OpenAI focused on developing artificial general intelligence for profit, according to Musk’s breach of contract lawsuit. It also filed a lawsuit demanding the ousting of its current CEO, Sam Altman.
Not only OpenAI has said that it’ll move to dismiss everything Musk claims but also has given screenshots of conversations that happened between Elon Musk and OpenAI’s Ilya Sutskever related to the development of AGI and keeping the AI development open source. “As we get closer to building AI, it will make sense to start being less open. The Open in openAI means that everyone should benefit from the fruits of AI after its built, but it’s totally OK to not share the science…”, to which Elon replied: “Yup”.”
The above is a small part of the conversations between Musk and Ilya posted by Open AI in its official blog post. So, it seems that Musk initially agreed to the development of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) without making it open-source. But Musk and the OpenAI team couldn’t reach a consensus on how OpenAI will operate as a for-profit entity. According to OpenAI, the billionaire wanted to have full control of the company and merge it with Tesla. “In early February 2018, Elon forwarded us an email suggesting that OpenAI should “attach to Tesla as its cash cow”, commenting that it was “exactly right… Tesla is the only path that could even hope to hold a candle to Google.,” claims OpenAI. “Elon soon chose to leave OpenAI, saying that our probability of success was 0, and that he planned to build an AGI competitor within Tesla.”
“We’re sad that it’s come to this with someone whom we’ve deeply admired—someone who inspired us to aim higher, then told us we would fail, started a competitor, and then sued us when we started making meaningful progress towards OpenAI’s mission without him,” stated OpenAI.
