SpaceX has taken a major step forward in its mission to provide global internet access by launching six Starlink satellites equipped with 5G direct-to-cell connectivity. This marks the first result of SpaceX’s 2022 partnership with T-Mobile to bring 5G directly to standard cell phones.

The initial service will provide text messaging, potentially expanding to voice calls and data in the future. While speeds will be slower than traditional 5G, this technology could still be a game-changer for people in remote areas who lack access to reliable internet.

The launch also marks the first of 2024 for SpaceX, taking off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The satellites were accompanied by Starlink V2 mini-satellites, which will further expand the company’s internet constellation.

SpaceX is working with carriers in several countries to make 5G connectivity available through Starlink. The company’s Starship rocket is still under development. Still, it is eventually expected to be used to deploy Starlink satellites, further increasing the reach of this groundbreaking technology.

This launch definitely looks like a major milestone for SpaceX. It has the potential to revolutionize communication in remote and underserved areas.
