In an official statement Nokia has officially denied that it has any plans to re-enter the smartphone business next year, saying:

Nokia reaffirms it currently has no plans to manufacture or sell consumer handsets

April 26, 2015

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Nokia notes recent news reports claiming the company communicated an intention to manufacture consumer handsets out of a R&D facility in China. These reports are false, and include comments incorrectly attributed to a Nokia Networks executive.

Nokia reiterates it currently has no plans to manufacture or sell consumer handsets.

The denial follows recent reports from credible sources like re/code that Nokia was working to license designs for smartphones to other OEMs and a more recent report from newspaper SCDaily.cn who named Nokia executive Mike Wang as confirming the move.

The statement comes as good news for Windows Phone, who’s current sales base draws largely from Nokia’s previous consumer base.
