Update: It looks like the film’s producers had old information. Eidos Montreal’s studio head said “Forget it!” when asked about Thief 5. Unless he’s hiding the fact that the game is in development and may be revealed at E3 2017, don’t get your hopes up.

It looks like a new Thief game is in the works to coincide with the legendary video game franchise’s film adaptation. This announcement comes from production company Straight Up Films, who listed the movie alongside the people involved with the project. If you read the project’s description, you can see that it clearly identifies an upcoming video game. The text is as follows:

“Thief is an action epic poised to be the next great multi-platform franchise. Originally released in 1998 by Eidos Interactive (Deus Ex) and distributed by Square Enix (Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy), the Thief series has spanned over fifteen years and four sequels continually retaining loyal audiences and attracting new fans with each iteration. Widely considered to be one of the greatest games ever created, a fifth sequel is currently in development to be released in step with this motion picture adaptation. Steeped in the steam-punk world created by the video game, the film will tell a new chapter in the storied world of the series’ hero.”

This should leave no doubt that another Thief game is here! The early entries in the franchise are some of the best video games even today and hopefully Square Enix will be able to recapture what made them great. It’s expected that the new Thief game will be announced at E3 2017.
