Ina Fried at AllthingsD reports that Microsoft has announced shipping more than 2 million Windows phones 7 devices in 2010, in the quarter ending December. (edit: Exact number 2.1 million according to ZDNet)

Given that Microsoft has announced that 1.5 million devices have shipped in December, this suggests the initial shipment has sold through, and more than 1.5 million handsets are now in the hands of consumers, which should be good news for developers hoping to make money of the platform.

Brand awareness has jumped 22 points to 66 percent since it was released, said Microsoft’s Greg Sullivan.

Microsoft also announced record customer satisfaction on AT&T with the OS, with an AT&T spokesman saying 93 percent of early customers are “satisfied” or “very satisfied,” adding, “That’s a really great number.”

“We believe this shows that Windows Phone has a bright future in an intensively competitive space,” the AT&T spokesman added.

“The numbers show pretty good momentum on the sales of the platform,” said Al Hilwa, an analyst at tech research firm IDC. “Anecdotally almost everyone who has seen the phone has commented on the style and fluidity of the interface. The apps numbers are excellent for this early stage of the lifecycle.”
