In a bizarre turn of events, Microsoft has removed a green hat from the Visual Studio 2019 installer. The company quietly removed the graphic from Visual Studio installer after it offended people in China.

As it turns out, making a man or in this case, a doodle of a boy wear a green hat is offensive in China. This apparently dates back to Yuan dynasty when the relatives of prostitutes were forced to wear green hats. Since then, this became an expression that Chinese use when a woman cheats on her husband or boyfriend.

Microsoft might have not known about it but the company has since taken it down. Microsoft confirmed the change on the Visual Studio Developer Community and now if you download and install the app, the green hat won’t show up.
