Key notes
- Microsoft Edge browser on desktops reached a new high of 13.14% market share in May 2024.
- Google Chrome lost market share on desktops, dropping to 64.87%.
- Chrome remains the dominant mobile browser with 65.94% market share.
- Microsoft Edge struggles on mobile platforms with a market share of just 0.34%.
Statcounter’s latest report for May 2024 shows a change in the use of desktop browsers. While Google Chrome remains the dominant player, Microsoft Edge achieved a new all-time high of 13.14%, gaining 0.32% from the previous month. Chrome, on the other hand, saw a decline, dropping from 65.65% to 64.87%.
This trend shows that Microsoft, the world’s most valuable company, continues efforts to integrate AI in Edge. Microsoft has also added “The AI browser” to Edge’s listing on Android’s Play Store and iOS’ App Store.
While Chrome maintains its lead, the change shows a competitive browser market. Apple’s Safari continues to hold third place with 8.79% market share, followed by Mozilla Firefox at 6.64%. Opera rounds out the top five with 3.23%.
Interestingly, Microsoft Edge struggles to gain interest on mobile platforms. Despite its desktop’s all-time high, its mobile version holds a negligible market share of roughly 0.34%, even lagging behind Samsung Internet’s 4.43%.
This could be because most Samsung phones have Samsung Internet as the default, and Google Pixels have Chrome as the default. Microsoft, who stepped out of the mobile market long ago, doesn’t have a mobile device other than Surfaces (still won’t call them mobiles) where they can set up Edge as a default web browser.
This report shows a dynamic browser market with Microsoft Edge making strides on desktops but not so much in the mobiles.
