Microsoft and Nokia ran a contest at the beginning of this year, offering a total of 500 Nokia Lumia 800’s for submitting a Mango app to the Marketplace. The first 500 developers to publish a Mango-enabled app which met the Metro design criteria and used fast app switching were the lucky winners of this contest.

Apparently the handsets are now being distributed to qualifying developers, with this email below going out to some:

Hi xxxx,

Im excited to let you know that your app has qualified for the App’y Nokia
New Year offer. I hope you enjoy your new Nokia Lumia 800 – en route. Thank
you for your dedication to developing for Windows Phone!

Cheers,
MS employee

The criteria to win a phone was not that high, so I suspect a few hundred phones will be on their way to developers soon.

Thanks Sunil for the tip.
