It was a source of intense speculation when Microsoft announced that Windows Phones outshipped iPhones in 7 countries.

Now the New York Times managed to get the IDC to reveal the list.

The countries are:

  • Argentina
  • India
  • Poland
  • Russia
  • South Africa
  • Ukraine
  • “rest of central and eastern Europe”, including Croatia,

The list, for Q4 2012,  was revealed by Kevin Restivo, an analyst at IDC, who noted that the last 3 countries together had less than 100,000 Windows Phones shipped there each (of course by the same token this meant the iPhone shipped even less, but of course a grey market does also exist for iPhones there).

Mr. Restivo said Windows Phones did particularly well in countries where Nokia was strong, and where there was less demand for iPhones due to high cost and the lack of carrier subsidies.

While some may choose to diminish the achievement, with major markets like Russia and emerging potentially big markets like India on the list I think Microsoft does have a lot to be proud off, and I am sure this list will continue to grow as Windows Phone advances.
