A couple of weeks back we reported that Huawei might not be able to use Android on the upcoming Mate 30 series. This was confirmed by a Google spokesperson who said they have to comply with Trump administration’s sanctions placed on Huawei. According to him, the 90-day extension given to Huawei applied to the existing smartphones and other devices. Google can’t offer its services to Huawei for new the launch of new devices without the prior permission from the government.

Fast forward to IFA 2019, Huawei confirmed that it indeed is true. Huawei can no longer use Google apps and services as the sanctions placed on the company forbids it from doing business with US-based companies. Dr Wang Chenglu, Huaweiโ€™s president of consumer software said the company is working on developing alternatives to Google apps and services, including GPS navigation. Despite the setback, the upcoming Mate 30 series will still come with Android out-of-the-box as Android is an open-source system. This means that the long-awaited Harmony OS won’t make an appearance on the Mate 30 series.

Huawei will be launching the Mate 30 series on 19th September in Munich, Germany. We expect the company to talk more on the topic during the event.
