Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has warned their enterprise customers that their SSDs have a firmware bug which could disable the drives 32,768 hours into operation.

The bug affects Serial-Attached SCSI solid-state drives used in server and storage products such as HPE ProLiant, Synergy, Apollo, JBOD D3xxx, D6xxx, D8xxx, MSA, StoreVirtual 4335 and StoreVirtual 3200.

32,768 hours equals a mere 3 years, 270 days and 8 hours, so well before drives are expected to fail. HPE warns the failure makes data on the drives unrecoverable and that restoring the data would be possible only “from backup in non-fault tolerance, such as RAID 0 and in fault tolerance RAID mode if more drives fail than what is supported by the fault tolerance RAID mode logical drive.”

20 HP Enterprise SSD models, listed below, are affected, but HPE has updated firmware for only 8 at present. The rest are expected in the second week of December.

HPE says users can check the uptime of their drives with the Smart Storage Administrator (SSA) software and unless the firmware is updated failure is inevitable. Drives installed simultaneously are expected to fail simultaneously, which could cause major issues for enterprise customers.

Updated firmware HPD8 is available for the following HP Enterprise SSD models:  VO0480JFDGT, VO0960JFDGU, VO1920JFDGV, VO3840JFDHA (download for VMware ESXi, Windows, Linux).

It is also available for MO0400JFFCF, MO0800JFFCH, MO1600JFFCK and MO3200JFFCL (download for VMware, Windows, Linux).
