The SkyDrive has just announced the finalized API for the service, allowing developers to easily up and download photos, documents and videos to the service.
According to Omar Shashine, Group Program Manager for SkyDrive, HandyScan is the first company to take advantage of this new feature, allowing users to upload their scanned pictures directly to SkyDrive.
The free version features:
- Scan any type of document or object
- Automatic scan trigger eliminates need to press a button, allowing firm pulse for optimal scan
- Independent scanning resolution and flash options
- Automatic optimization of scanned images
- Deep zoom in/out controls for the resulting scan
- Align and crop scanned document
- Perspective and skew correction for the not perfect takes
- Scan multiple pages per document and save as a single file
- Create collage pages with scanned images
- Import & export photos
- Upload scanned documents to the cloud (SkyDrive or Dropbox)
- Backup all your sources to the cloud as well
- Choose size and quality for sending scanned results
- Add text to documents. Can fill in forms without a pen!
- Scan/digitalize signatures
- Electronically sign documents with your scanned signatures
- Realistic scanning visuals
It also comes in a paid version which ads PDF conversion, emailing options and the ability to restore backups. The app can be found in Marketplace here.
Of course the most desired usage for SkyDrive would be music streaming and it seems Microsoft knows this, as they specifically do not support uploading MP3s to the service, supporting simple WAVs only. Bizarrely they do support video uploading and downloading in H.264 and .wmv format.
Music files can however be downloaded, if one do not mind using Microsoft’s unoptimised tools for uploading the files to the service.
Microsoft is however calling for developers to create apps which take advantage of the new locker in the Sky. Besides music streaming, what else would we want Developers to create for the service? Let us know below.
