It looks like Google is working on some UI changes to Google Maps. In a recent beta update, Google has added floating categories in Google Maps. Apart from this, the layers option has moved to the left side of Google Maps.

You can now directly tap on a particular category to search for the same in Maps. This will give users easy access to these categories and they look better as well. However, the new changes are very limited and even though we have the latest version of Google Maps Beta installed, these categories didn’t show up.

Google might be planning to roll out the new changes with other features announced during I/O 2018. For now, do let us know in the comments section below if these changes are visible for you.
