Google has announced a significant upgrade to its student groups feature in Google Classroom, aimed at improving differentiated instruction and communication for educators. Originally launched last year, the student groups tool allows teachers to organize students into sub-sections based on various needs, such as reading level or subject proficiency.
Starting April 22, 2025, Google is rolling out new functionalities that further streamline classroom management. Teachers can now email specific groups directly, a useful feature for targeted communication. Additionally, the grading process is more efficient with the ability to sort assignments by groups on the Student Work page. This enhancement allows educators to track performance trends and tailor feedback accordingly.

Another key improvement allows teachers to edit group memberships while creating assignments, eliminating the need to navigate away from their workflow to the People page. Group names and member details remain visible only to teachers and co-teachers, maintaining privacy and minimizing distractions for students.
These updates will be gradually released over 15 days to users in both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. Available exclusively to Google Workspace for Education Plus and the Teaching and Learning Upgrade users, this development reaffirms Google’s commitment to empowering teachers with flexible, intuitive tools that support personalized learning experiences.
