Windows 10 updates work well for the most part but when they don’t it can break your system. Unfortunately, the same is true for the latest Windows 10 updates.
According to the Microsoft support page (via PC Gamer), anyone using System Restore might face issues with the latest Windows 10 updates. If a user has system protection enabled and has created a System Restore point then Windows 10 updates might not install and reverting to a previous state will exit with a stop code (0xc000021a). Microsoft listed down the chain of events which will trigger the issue.
- You install Windows 10 on a clean computer.
- You turn on system protection, and then create a system restore point that is named “R1.”
- You install one or more Windows 10 updates.
- After the updates have finished installing, you restore the system to the “R1” restore point.
Fortunately, Microsoft has confirmed that it’s a known issue and has offered a temporary fix for anyone who runs into the issue. If you’re one of the unfortunate users, you can follow the steps below to fix the problem.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > More recovery options > Startup settings, and then select Restart now.
- In the list of startup settings, select Disable driver signature enforcement.
Note You may have to use the F7 key to select this setting. - Allow the startup process to continue. As Windows restarts, the system restore process should resume and finish.
You can also disable driver signature enforcement on Windows 11.
The above-mentioned process would work after Windows has exited with the stop code and you’re inside the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). If you’re not in the recovery environment then you might need to restart your device using the hardware switch twice to force it into WinRE.
The process is lengthy and we will have to wait for Microsoft to fix it. In the meantime, you can either disable system protection or just don’t install the latest Windows 10 Updates.
