Google is working on allowing users to pin tabs in Chrome on Android, just as they can on desktop. This feature was spotted on Chromium Gerrit and will soon be available as a flag in the Canary version of Chrome.
Pinned tabs have long been available on desktop browsers, allowing users to quickly access important tabs. These tabs are small and appear on the left side of the tab strip. They don’t have a close button, so users can’t accidentally close them. Pinned tabs typically show only the site icon instead of the title.
On desktop, users usually right-click a tab to pin it, keeping their favorite sites open for quick access without losing them—even when many tabs are open. Pinning and unpinning tabs is a standard feature in Chrome and other desktop browsers, and Google will soon bring this functionality to Chrome on Android as well.
Chrome for Android Could Soon Support Pinned Tabs
According to Chromium Gerrit, Google wants to allow users to have “persistent and quick access to their most important websites.” Users will be able to pin tabs “through various entry points like context menus and overflow menu items.”
Google notes in the commit message: “[PinnedTabs] Add feature flag related to the addition of the ability of pinning tabs in Android.”
The feature could soon be available in Chrome Canary behind a flag named “Android Pinned Tabs.” The flag description reads as follows:
Enables the ability to pin tabs through various entry points like context menus and overflow menu items. This addresses the need for users to have persistent and quick access to their most important websites.
Currently, most mobile browsers do not support pinning tabs the same way desktop browsers do. While browsers like Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari allow tab pinning on desktop, mobile versions generally rely on bookmarks for quick access.
However, there is demand for this feature—especially among users who frequently revisit certain tabs and want them to remain open across sessions. That’s why Google is working to bring tab pinning to Chrome on Android.
That’s not All. Google is working to bring Document Picture in Picture and Material You Design for Tab Group Colors in Chrome on Android.
