On November 5, 2025, The Game Bakers will release Cairn on PlayStation 5, offering players a survival climbing experience that emphasizes precision and endurance. A demo is available now, allowing players to test their skills on the Tenzen mountain ridge before confronting the formidable Mount Kami.
In Cairn, players control Aava, a professional mountaineer aiming to be the first to summit Mount Kami. Unlike typical climbing mechanics in games, Cairn focuses entirely on the act of climbing itself. Players must manually position each of Aava’s limbs, using simple controls—primarily the left stick and a grab button—to navigate the rock face. The challenge lies not in complex inputs but in strategic placement and maintaining balance.

The game features an advanced movement system that simulates realistic climbing dynamics. Aava’s stamina and posture are crucial; overexertion or poor positioning can lead to falls, resetting progress. There is no traditional user interface; players must rely on visual and auditory cues, such as Aava’s breathing and limb tremors, to assess her condition.
Cairn also incorporates survival elements. Players need to manage resources like food and water, rest to recover, and repair equipment between ascents. The game offers an Expedition mode, allowing players to choose between characters and climbing styles, including alpine and free solo, and share their results with others.
Developed over five years by a team of 25, Cairn represents the culmination of The Game Bakers’ “trilogy on freedom,” following Furi and Haven. The team consulted with alpinist Élisabeth Revol to capture the essence of mountaineering. They describe the experience as akin to a persistent boss battle, where each ascent requires skill and resource management.
Cairn’s art direction and story come from comic book artist Mathieu Bablet, while the audio design features contributions from Lukas Julian Lentz and Martin Stig Andersen, known for their work on Cocoon, Limbo, and Inside.
