We head a new days ago from noted Microsoft reporter Mary Jo Foley that despite numerous reports that the Surface Phone was heading to market this year, the project was, in fact, being postponed and even cancelled, as no clear use case was identified for the device.

At the time many of our readers dismissed the report, but now another higher profile Microsoft journalist has been added confirmation to that report.

Tom Warren from the Verge writes that the device is definitely not coming in 2018, and that the entire project (by which we assume he means Andromeda) is under review, as  “there’s no app ecosystem to support it.”

The wording of the last bit is very telling I think and suggests that instead of Microsoft once again trying to penetrate the market with a new operating system the now very pragmatic company may instead be looking to release an Android-powered device in the future, with the Google Play services intact (due to EU anti-trust actions) but otherwise powered by Microsoft software.

You heard it here first.
