Apple sometimes backs the wrong horse, and their users get stuck on a branch of technology long after other companies have abandoned them.

Today MacRumors reports that Blayne Curtis, an analyst at Barclays, suggests 3D Touch and FaceID may turn out to be two such aborted attempts to innovate that may fall by the wayside after other companies decided consumers would prefer other solutions for their smartphones.

According to Curtis the 2020 iPhone may lack both features, with the 2019 iPhone dropping 3D Touch (the 2018 iPhone XR already lacks it) and the 2020 iPhone adopting an in-display ultrasonic fingerprint reader similar to the Samsung Galaxy S10. According to Curtis however, this would be an improved full-screen version of TouchID where users can press anywhere on the screen.

Apple is reportedly increasing the RAM in the iPhone from 3G to 4GB , and release a new version of the iPhone SE with iPhone 8 internals for those with smaller, cheaper hands.

Other innovations is 5G support, OLED screens for all devices and a 3D camera at the back.
