There has been speculation that Microsoft will drop the Windows CE kernel for some time now, and this only accelerated once Microsoft ported Windows 8 to ARM.

Now Tom Hounsell, hacking around the recently leaked Windows 8 build has found some SMS handling code in some .dll’s at C:\Windows\<SystemFolder>\WinMetadata\*.dll.

Windows Phone 7 is currently based on the Windows CE 6 kernel, which is pretty old. While this does not prove Windows Phone 8 will be based on Windows 8, with ARM tablets set to have built-in telephone services the need to maintain two kernels that do essentially the same thing appear increasingly redundant.
