One of the advantages of a full Windows OS is file management. With full desktop OSes, you can manage your files in ways that are not possible on mobile devices and tablets.

In the Windows File Explorer, for instance, it’s not immediately obvious that you can work with batch files.

So, in this post, we’re going to show you how to rename multiple Windows files at once.

How to batch rename files

  1. Navigateย to the folder location which contains the files you want to remain.
  2. Right-click on the folders, and select the rename command.
  3. Change the names of the folders to whatever you want, and Windows will automatically compensate by adding in “(1)” and “(2)” where necessary.

How to batch rename extensions

  1. Navigate to the folder containing the files you want. Once there, launch Command prompt from the folder menu by holding down shift and right-clicking on an empty space.
  2. ย Once in Command prompt, you can now use the โ€œrenโ€ (for rename) command to rename, for example, .jpg to .png. The example in the slideshow below for instance shows a transition from *docx to *doc. The command used was “ren” *docxย * doc.ย
  3. Enter the extension you wish to convert, using the same syntax as above.
