Gameheads, a nonprofit based in Oakland, has launched a new initiative with support from Xbox and Humble Bundle to expand career opportunities in game development for low-income youth of color. The collaboration includes $300,000 in funding from Xbox and an additional $500,000 raised through a Humble Bundle campaign featuring indie titles like Coral Island and A Short Hike.

Founded in 2015, Gameheads trains young people in video game design, coding, project management, and storytelling. With this new funding, the group will expand its Career Pathways program, which places students in paid internships with major game studios and tech companies.

The funding also supports the organization’s national expansion, building on its existing partnerships with studios like Double Fine, Niantic, and Unity. Gameheads reports that over 90% of its students have gone on to college or into careers in tech and gaming. For Xbox and Humble, the partnership aims to push towards bridging equity gaps in the gaming industry by investing in early-career talent.

In other recent headlines, Xbox has also received the game, Spirit of the North 2, for Xbox Series X|S. You can read all about it here.
