Following the 24H2 update, many Windows 11 users are reporting their annoyance regarding the BitLocker encryption. This update enables BitLocker by default, even on Home editions, and requires users to link their Microsoft Accounts to store recovery keys. While the encryption is designed to enhance security, it has introduced several issues for users who prefer local accounts.
Many Bitlocker users have reported that losing access to their Microsoft Account could result in permanent data loss. Without proper backups of recovery keys, BitLocker can lock users out of their data, including important files like family photos and documents. For many, data access is more crucial than encryption, making this default security feature problematic.

The change is part of Microsoft’s broader push to tie Windows 11 to Microsoft Accounts, which also includes removing the BYPASSNRO workaround. This change prevents users from skipping sign-ins during setup, making local accounts more difficult to use.
Amid rising frustration for data loss, Bitlocker users are asking Microsoft to provide recovery keys and better educate users to protect their own data. For now, those upgrading to 24H2 are advised to check their encryption settings and securely back up recovery keys to avoid potential data loss.
