WhatsApp plans to introduce the much-awaited features on its browser-based “Web” client. In an upcoming update, the demanded voice and video calling feature will soon be available without needing a desktop app.
At present, voice and video calling can only be accessed on WhatsApp’s native apps for Windows and macOS. But, in the new update, WhatsApp Web on Chrome, Safari, Edge and more browsers will let users make and receive both voice and video calls.
The aim of this transition is to improve the user experience by making it easier to communicate without switching between platforms. This update brought a simplified call button appearing in both individual and group chats, allowing access to voice and video calls .

In individual chats, WhatsApp Web users will have the option to choose between voice or video calls, while in group chats, the button defaults to a video call but includes a voice call option.
It is a step in WhatsApp’s apparent interest in expanding its usability for communication, particularly for remote work and digital communication. It is part of an effort to create a more unified and easy to use experience on all platforms for Whatsapp users, as voice and video calling gains popularity.
In other recent headlines, WhatsApp is also working to release an on-device transciption feature for its voice messages. You can read more about it here.
