Even as iOS 13 and Android 10 roll out with dark themes in tow, WhatsApp is continuing to develop its own dark theme.

The folks over at WABeta info did some digging into the new beta build of WhatsApp for Android and found some details on the upcoming WhatsApp update.

While the dark theme isn’t user-facing yet, a lot of work has gone behind the scenes to prep it for release.

First of all, it won’t be jet-black like Instagram and Messenger. Instead, WhatsApp’s dark theme is (for now) a dark blue like that on the Twitter app.

You’ll be able to change the theme under a new Theme page in the settings menu where WhatsApp will present three options; Light, Dark and System Default which will respect whatever the system default currently is.

Dark Theme has not yet been officially announced by WhatsApp, nor has it yet appeared in any live build of the app – beta or otherwise. For now, all we know is that it’s coming sooner or later.
