DeepSeek, the Chinese popular rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has just been hit by “large-scale malicious attacks.” So, if you’re looking to register for DeepSeek, now is maybe not the best time for it.
The AI company is temporarily limiting user registrations for its chatbot service on January 27, 2025, after experiencing large-scale malicious attacks and a major outage. The service had widespread technical issues, with its API and web chat experiencing “degraded performance” and a “partial outage.”
“Due to large-scale malicious attacks on DeepSeek’s services, registration may be busy. Please wait and try again. Registered users can log in normally. Thank you for your understanding and support,” the warning message reads.
Initially, only folks with China-based phone numbers could register, though this restriction was later eased.
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has recently praised DeepSeek and the flagship AI models that power it.
โDeepseekโs r1 is an impressive model, particularly around what theyโre able to deliver for the price,โ Altman says in a post on X.
At just $6 million, the Chinese AI startup created its DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-R1 models at a much lower cost compared to US competitors such as OpenAI and Meta. The app has since then topped the US App Store and surprised ChatGPT in popularity, but not without scrutiny from its Western rivals.
Nvidia, a major player in the AI and semiconductor industries, has faced a big drop in stock value, losing nearly 17% of its market share after DeepSeek’s surprising rise.
