Facebook has been working on dark mode for its Messenger app for a while now. The company recently revealed that the work is still incomplete and will take some time before the dark mode is officially available.

However, it looks like Facebook embedded an Easter Egg inside the Messenger app which allows users to get access to dark mode immediately. The app does notify that the dark mode is still in work and is inconsistent around the app.

That said, if you’re the curious type, you can follow the steps below to enable dark mode on Facebook Messenger.

  • Open any chat and send the user moon emoji from the Facebook emoji list ( ? this one, specifically).
  • Now give it a moment and you should see a pop-up on the top of the app saying that you have found dark mode.
  • The popup will instruct you to head to settings to enable it. Once in Settings, you should see the option to enable dark mode. Tap on the toggle switch to turn on dark mode.

Facebook Messenger’s dark mode is still a work in progress but from what we have seen, it’s worth the wait. We do hope Facebook finalizes dark mode soon and roll it out to the public. In the meantime, you can use the Easter Egg to make dark mode work on Facebook Messenger.
