Microsoft has been redesigning Windows with Fluent Design, and now this designer has developed a concept of his own, taking the fluent design concept to all areas of the desktop.
According to him, his aim is to “redesign the [Windows] shell to be cleaner and more intelligent”
This concept is called Fluid Desktop, and it includes a few refinements to the Windows Shell.
The taskbar is redone for an adaptive taskbar that grows according to how many apps are open and pinned. The system tray has been refined, and only essential icons are shown at any time, and it all floats in a very Chrome OS inspired way.
The concepts also refine Sets with a new user interface for apps in a set, making it clear that apps in a set are, well, in a set, and not cluttering up your taskbar with icons.
Overall, it’s a nice concept that brings together many disparate Windows elements.
There’s a lot of work and explanation out into this concept, and simply summarising and aggregating it for you doesn’t do it justice, in my humble opinion.
You can read more on this concept, and the reasoning behind it at Michael West’s Medium post here.
