Valve is reportedly working on a new console (based on Steam) to compete with the PS5 and Xbox Series. Take this rumor with a grain of salt.
The rumored device, which industry insider eXtas1s first reveals (video in Spanish), is said to be developed alongside updated versions of the Steam Controller and a new VR headset, with Valve reportedly collaborating with AMD on RDNA 4 technology.
Rumors about this mysterious console have been going on for quite some time now. Brad Lynch, another reliable insider, earlier said that Valve was working on a device codenamed “Valve Fremont,” which will aim to rival the PS5 and Xbox Series X. This console will run on SteamOS and be powered by an AMD “Lilac” chip, likely based on Zen 4.
Seems like we’ve heard it all before. This rumor may ring a bell a bit, especially with the ill-fated Steam Machines, which miserably failed in the market although it led us to the success of the Steam Deck.
At that time, Valve insisted so much on using Linux as the operating system, which drastically limited the number of games that could be played, as most PC games were designed for Windows.
This decision conflicted with the flexibility expected by PC gamers, who prefer modularity, and ultimately hindered the platform’s success. That, besides the high price point and its underwhelming performance, above all.
Steam Deck, despite its success, had hefty competition from Lenovo Legion Go, ASUS’ ROG Ally, and even Switch which had just become Nintendo’s highest-selling console.
Powered by AMD’s Phoenix processors and capable of running full Windows OS, the Legion Go promises impressive performance for on-the-go gaming with removable controllers, shoulder and side triggers, USB-C ports, a headphone jack, volume controls, and a micro-SD slot.
