What do you get if you buy a 5G phone in March 2019? Trick question, bragging rights and not much else.

Sony is cognizant of this as it plans out its portfolio for 2019..

In a discussion with TechRadar, the firm revealed that it wasn’t going to delve into 5G like other OEMs until the market was primed and ready for it.

“Obviously, we are heavily cooperating with our partners to develop for 5G, and depending on the country and the customers need we will introduce the 5G model accordingly.,” Said Sony Mobile’s President, Mitsuya Kishida. He went on to say, “Obviously, we are heavily cooperating with our partners to develop for 5G, and depending on the country and the customers need we will introduce the 5G model accordingly. ”

Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi and ZTE have introduced phones with 5G support just this past weekend, and more are expected to trickle out over the next year.

5G is  going to be the new 4G — if you remember how painful that rollout was. There’s no reason to go out of your way to pick up a new handset just because it has one more G than your old one if the network towers can’t handle it anyway. This is not saying that when 5G rolls out it won’t have many benefits, it will, just that it’s not ready yet.

Smartphone manufacturers have announced their 5G efforts, but they know you’re buying their cheaper, more normal phones anyway. Sony also knows this, and it won’t be wasting time with anything it’s not selling.
