Key notes
- Nvidia’s RTX 5090 launch has faced severe stock shortages, with delays stretching into weeks or months.
- Retailers received minimal stock, and many customers had to camp or turn to scalpers due to high demand.
- MSI confirmed RTX 5090 pre-orders will begin on January 30, but shipments are delayed until February 6 due to supply chain issues.
Nvidia’s launch of the RTX 5090 graphic card has been disastrous, and not too long after launch, some retailers even said that they’re out of it until the next couple of weeks or months.
The tech giant previously warned that the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 graphics cards, set for release on January 30, might face stock shortages due to high demand. The company acknowledged the possibility of stock-outs and is working with partners to ship more units to retailers.
Some retailers and system builders have now already reported delays, with the $1,999 RTX 5090 potentially unavailable for weeks or even months.
The actual availability of the card has actually been far lower than expected. Retailers, including Micro Center, saw minimal stock on launch day, with some locations receiving only a handful of units.
Many customers had to wait for days in line (even camped outside) or received vouchers for future purchases, while others have turned to scalpers selling the card for inflated prices. Preorders are now being taken, with some retailers (as noted by The Verge) like Scan in the UK expecting restocks only by May 2025, several months after the official launch.
MSI, one of Nvidia’s partners, has previously confirmed that pre-orders for the RTX 5090 would start on January 30. But, the company will delay shipments until February 6 due to supply chain issues and high demand, further complicated by the Chinese New Year.
The RTX 5090 promises to offer 8K gaming thanks to DLSS 4. DLSS Performance Mode at 8K even provided superior image quality compared to native 4K with DLAA.
