Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra to have "strongest optical zoom system known"

Yesterday we had most of the specs of the Samsung Galaxy S21 leak, and today we have a leak, courtesy of reliable Samsung leaker Ice Universe, which adds some more detail regarding the camera.

We have earlier heard the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra will have an improved 108MP sensor, a successor to the sensor Samsung uses in the Galaxy S20 Ultra and Galaxy Note20 Ultra. The S21 Ultra will also have a 12MP ultrawide camera and two telephoto sensors: a 3x optical telephoto and a 10x optical “super” telephoto, with both zoom cameras featuring 130% larger pixels and dual pixel autofocus, allowing Samsung to bring back 100X Space Zoom. The device will also feature laser autofocus on the S21 Ultra.

Ice Universe has now confirmed the pixels will be 1.22 micrometres in size, significantly up from the 0.8 micrometres of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra zoom camera, which means the pixels will be able to capture more light, particularly important with zoom cameras.

It is this large pixel size and the fact that the sensors both feature dual-pixel auto-focus, again a first for the zoom lens, which has prompted Ice Universe to call it the  “strongest optical zoom system known” for a smartphone.

As usual, Samsung appears to have addressed the deficits present in this year’s devices, which of course featured focus issues and below expectation 100x super zoom, with 2021’s improvements.
