The world is moving very rapidly to wrap-around screens, and Chinese OEM Oppo is right there with the rest of the world’s smartphone manufacturers, as demonstrated by a recent patent.

Their patent for an ‘Electronic device and manufacturing method for electronic device’, filed November 2018 at the USPTO, describes how to embed sensors under a waterfall screen that covers all 4 edges of the device.

Their solution is not overly complicated – it is to have small windows in the LCD on the very edges, but above the frame, on which content can not be displayed, but through which light can still enter.

This light, which could be for an ambient light sensor or infra-red proximity sensor, can then be guided to sensors under the screen, where they can then do their thing.

The patent does not describe the solution for more complex sensors such as cameras, but we have seen companies find numerous methods of dealing with the issue, ranging from pop-up cameras to rear screens to the most unproven –  under-screen front-facing cameras.

The full patent can be seen here.
