Joe Belfiore, corporate vice president of Windows Phone, has just posted that only the new generation of Windows Phone 7.5 handsets will get the WIFI hotspot feature, and that would only be if their carrier agreed.

While we can understand the second I find the first a bit hard to swallow, and hope Microsoft reconsiders.  Being forced to upgrade for a feature which could easily be included in current devices is not being a very good sport at all.

Update:

According to MSicc  (and Joe of course) OEMs can enable to feature by shipped an updated driver. While Joe “suspects most will”, I in turn suspect most will want to preserve an important differentiator between their old and new handsets as an incentive for users to upgrade.

Maybe I am just a cynic…
