Nokia has today confirmed their plans to release HERE Maps app for Android and iOS devices. So far, HERE Mobile apps were exclusive to Windows Phone devices. Following the acquisition of Nokia’s Devices and Services division by Microsoft, HERE location business stayed with the Nokia. Now, they are planning to release HERE Maps app for both Android and iOS platforms. These upcoming HERE Maps app will be fully featured with offline navigation, turn-by-turn navigation, advanced transit support and more. Nokia is planning to release them for free before end of this year.

Speaking to WSJ, Fernback, an executive at HERE revealed that Nokia doesn’t expect any immediate financial returns from the new map applications for Android and iOS. Also, they are planning to use these apps to generate more feedback to fine-tune Nokia’s location engine. With more accurate mapping data, Nokia will monetize by selling location data to corporate customers, like auto makers and logistics-dependent businesses who license HERE Maps. As we wrote about it before, Microsoft should work on differentiating Windows Phone platform with more new apps.
