New York Times ends support for its Windows Phone app, says the website is better

There is, of course, a flood of Windows Phone apps leaving the Windows Store, but some of them are more high profile than others. One such as is the New York Times app for Windows Phone, more because of the profile of the august institution than the popularity of the app itself.

In a post on their website, the newspaper announced that it is ending support for their app this month, suggesting Windows Phone users use the website instead.

They write:

Beginning in December 2017, The New York Times will no longer support the NYTimes app for Windows Phone. You can access a more complete New York Times experience through our mobile site (mobile.nytimes.com) from your phone’s browser.

The mobile website includes all of the same content and sections as the Windows App, plus it has a more interactive and modern home page that is similar to our other digital experiences. All New York Times home delivery and digital subscribers have unlimited access to both our mobile and desktop sites. Nonsubscribers will continue to receive to a number of free articles per month.

What is interesting is that they describe the mobile website as having the same content as the mobile app but more interactive, ignoring special features of the app such as the live tile, notifications and lock screen notifications (above).

While most of our readers will not lament the passing of the app after already moving on to other mobile platforms, we have recently discovered Microsoft’s Andromeda device aka Surface Phone, will be able to run Windows Phone 8.1 apps, meaning a loss for Windows Phone is also a loss for Microsoft’s future platform also.
