It seems one of Microsoft’s Garage projects is set to make it pretty big.
Microsoft Launcher, which started as the Arrow Launcher, was the creation of Microsoft’s Garage team, the Microsoft program that encourages employees to work on projects that they are passionate about, even if they have no relation to their primary function within the company.
In recent years most of their projects have been for iOS and Android, and I suspect it is true to say most have not made any impact (who remembers Parchi and Torque.) With the Microsoft Launcher, however, it seems the team finally has a hit on their hands.
Recently we reported that Microsoft Launcher has been downloaded 10 million times and is heading for the 50 million download mark. At one point, the app was also in the top trending list on the Play Store. Now the app has been recognized by Fast Company as one of the best 25 apps of 2017, sitting proudly in the number 8 spot.
Calling it a “polished effort” they commend the simple two-pane user interface, glanceable information and “steady stream of gorgeous wallpapers.”
A suspect one of the reasons for the success of the app is that a Launcher is one of the most important applications on your phone, and having one available by a trusted multi-billion dollar company makes users more willing to try out a replacement, as opposed to one from a random company without a real business address.
If you haven’t tried Microsoft Launcher then we do recommend you give it a spin. Microsoft Launcher seamlessly syncs with your laptop and allows you to send files and photos directly from your phone to your laptop using “Continue on PC”. Apart from that, the launcher also lets you download and change your wallpapers daily using Bing so you have a new one every day. You can download Microsoft Launcher from the Google Play Store below.
I have installed it and still have to find a reason to remove it. If you have given it a try, let us know your own impressions below.
