As Minecraft continues to ride its popularity years after its release, Microsoft has announced that there are no plans to develop a straight sequel for the title.

Despite over 95 million people playing the game every month and being the second best selling game of all time, new games in the Minecraft franchise will only be spin-off titles like the upcoming Minecraft Dungeons.

When asked about the possibility of a Minecraft 2 by Business Insider Australia, head of Minecraft Helen Chaing said that it will not come to be.

“I really don’t think that makes sense for Minecraft,” Chiang said. “It’s something that always fractures the community”

“That’s what we’ve decided to expand [the franchise]. I think Dungeons is the first example of that – is a way we’re trying to keep our community together. That’s why our updates are free. We don’t want to ask [players] to move from Minecraft 1 to Minecraft 2. We just want them to enjoy Minecraft.”

Despite purchasing the Minecraft IP and Mojang back in 2014, it’s endearing that Microsoft isn’t attempting to milk the popularity of the franchise. Letting Minecraft be Minecraft is the best thing for the game and the players, and Microsoft knows that.
