After 10 years of servicing, Microsoft will be ending the support for Windows 7 OS next year. In case you have been living under a rock, you should know that Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 7 after January 14th, 2020. The company expects individuals to upgrade to Windows 10 to receive future feature and security updates. Microsoft is already sending notifications to Windows 7 users to upgrade to Windows 10 before this date.

Microsoft today announced that it will start displaying a full-screen warning that describes the risk of continuing to use Windows 7 Service Pack 1 after it reaches end of support on January 14, 2020. The warning will continue to appear until you take some action. Microsoft noted that this warning will only appear on the following editions of Windows 7 Service Pack 1:

  • Starter.
  • Home Basic.
  • Home Premium.
  • Professional. If you have purchased the Extended Security Update (ESU), the notification will not appear.
  • Ultimate.

Microsoft also mentioned that this Windows 7 related warning will not appear on domain-joined machines or machines in kiosk mode. Last year, Microsoft announced that it will offer paid Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESU) through January 2023 for enterprise customers. Windows 7 ESU will be sold on a per-device basis and the price will increase each year. Last month, Microsoft announced that Windows 7 Extended Security Updates will be available for small and midsize businesses as well. Microsoft last week announced a new offer under which EA and EAS customers who have active subscription licenses for Windows 10 Enterprise E5, Microsoft 365 E5, Microsoft 365 E5 Security, or Windows VDA E5 (as of January 14, 2020) will receive Windows 7 Extended Security Updates for Year 1 for free.
