Microsoft Details New Windows 8.1 Bing App: Food & Drink

The new Food & Drink Bing app offers access to a variety of recipes from culinary publishers like AllRecipes, popular cookbooks and food bloggers like Food 52, as well as recipes and tips from top chefs like Wolfgang Puck and Tom Colicchio.  More sources will be added over time. The app also offers a wine encyclopedia with information on over 1.5 million bottles of wine, 3.3 million tasting notes and hundreds of popular cocktail recipes.

Hands Free Swiping

When you’re cooking, inevitably your hands will get messy, touching your tablet is probably not the best idea.  The Food & Drink App has a Hands-Free Cooking Mode, which allows you to follow recipes step by step from your device by waving your hand across the camera.

Comprehensive Recipe and Wine List

With Food & Drink you can browse recipes by cuisine, level of difficulty, preferred cooking method or by specific ingredients. You can also browse pictures of meals and tap or click on the image to see the full recipe.

Food & Drink assembles wine ratings and tasting notes on over 1.5 million bottles of wine from around the world to help you learn about and select bottles of wine that are perfect for your meal.

The Food & Drink app also provides helpful tips on how to get started in the kitchen, to new cooking techniques, shopping guides and culinary news, how-to guides, and tips and tricks to master culinary techniques.

The food culture section, in the app, features food and drink related articles from across the web.

World-renowned chefs including Tom Colicchio, Wolfgang Puck, Daniel Boulud, Jacques Pepin, Joel Robuchon, Marcus Samuelsson and Vikas Khanna (more many more) will provide insights, recipes and culinary tips.  Bing is recruiting more Chefs to contribute to the app.

You can also save your own recipies into the app, your recipes can be completely private only available for you to see.  You can also save other recipes into your collection by simply right click or touch the recipe tile and drag it down slightly.  The app also has a built in meal planner where you can save your recipes.  Another feature is Instant Shopping Lists: you can assemble a shopping list directly from the recipes page. You can either print your list or email it directly to your phone.
